We’re putting it head-to-head against some heavyweights: the RX 7900 XT and the RX 7900 GRE. Is this new mid-range GPU a worthy successor, or does it stumble in the neon streets of Cyberpunk 2077? The GPU landscape of 2025 has been flooded with new card announcements and actual deliveries. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the RX 9070 early and spent weeks testing it. After running various benchmarks and games, I’m here to give you the lowdown on whether this graphics card deserves a spot in your gaming rig.
Design and Power Consumption
The RX 9070 is physically smaller than its competitors. It features a dual-fan design and a dual-slot architecture, but with a narrower profile. Power is delivered through two 8-pin PSU connectors, boasting a power draw of just over 200 watts. Interestingly, board partners can push it to 240 watts peak, which means it’s likely a drop-in upgrade for systems with an RTX 3070 or similar card.
New Naming Convention
So, what’s up with the new naming convention? Traditionally, AMD has used hundreds models like the 5700, 6800, and 7900, with XT being the more powerful variant. The RX 9070 breaks this tradition. Perhaps they are aligning with NVIDIA’s new naming scheme, but it certainly makes for an interesting comparison.
Benchmarking the Contenders
Let’s meet our contenders:
- RX 7900 XT: The flagship beast from AMD’s RDNA 3 lineup, known for its raw power.
- RX 7900 GRE: The mid-tier sibling offering solid performance at a better price.
- RX 9070 Non-XT: Built on AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture, aiming to steal the show as the new mid-range champ.
We’re testing these GPUs across six games at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions with ultra settings, FSR, and ray tracing enabled where applicable.
Game Performance
Cyberpunk 2077
First up, we’re cruising through Night City. Starting with raster-only performance (no ray tracing), at 1080p, the RX 7900 GRE leads with 149 FPS, followed closely by the 9070 at 112 FPS, then the XT at 110 FPS, and the GRE at 103 FPS. At 4K, the RX 7900 XT edges out the competition with 49 FPS, but the RX 9070 is right behind at 48 FPS.
Now let’s crank up the eye candy with FSR and ray tracing enabled. At 1080p, the RX 9070 dominates with 106 FPS, leaving the RX 7900 XT behind at 97 FPS and the GRE at 84 FPS. The lead grows at 1440p, with 89 FPS for the 9070, 74 FPS for the XT, and 68 for the GRE. At 4K, the 9070 hits 55 FPS, beating the XT’s 49 FPS.
Indiana Jones Game
Next, we’re swinging into action with the new Indiana Jones game. At 1080p, the RX 7900 XT leads with 133 FPS, followed by the GRE at 126 FPS, while the RX 9070 lags behind at 101 FPS. This trend continues at 1440p and 4K, where the RX 9070 struggles, showing it might need a driver update.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024
Taking to the skies, at 1440p, the RX 9070 edges out with 69 FPS, just ahead of the RX 7900 XT’s 68 FPS. At 4K, the XT leads with 58 FPS while the RX 9070 comes in at 57 FPS. Smooth flying for everyone!
Red Dead Redemption 2
At 1080p, the RX 7900 XT leads with 152 FPS, but the RX 9070 isn’t far behind at 142 FPS. At 4K, the RX 9070 gets 80 FPS, nearly matching the XT’s 82 FPS. Not bad for a mid-range card!
Starfield
Finally, exploring the stars in Starfield, the RX 9070 hits 120 FPS at 4K, nearly matching the XT’s 124 FPS and crushing the GRE’s 79 FPS. If you want a gorgeous-looking space adventure, the RX 9070 seems to have this game’s number.
The Verdict
The RX 9070 Non-XT is a ray tracing beast in games like Cyberpunk 2077 and holds its own at 1440p and 4K across the board. If you tune your settings, you’ll likely play over 100 FPS in most games at 4K. However, it does stumble in Indiana Jones, especially with ray tracing, indicating that game optimizations and driver support matter a lot.
